  4. Confirm the invoice format before you order. Finance will not accept a handwritten receipt or a vague commercial invoice. The vendor who can’t provide proper invoicing can cost you more than the discount they offered.
  5. Check that they are an official or authorised photovoltaic module distributor. If they are not on the manufacturer’s distributor list, ask why. There can be a legitimate answer, but it had better be a good one.

The story that made me a believer

Everyone warned me about this. I ignored the warning because the price was roughly €0.022 per watt lower than our usual cost. A broker had a partial pallet of panels that “came from a cancelled project.” They looked fine. The serial numbers, however, did not all match a clean delivery note. Finance could not reconcile the shipment to our purchase order, and we spent weeks trying to confirm warranty eligibility.

It took one bad experience to turn me from a price-driven buyer into a process-driven buyer. I only believe in authorised distribution now because I once skipped that step and created a mess that saved us nothing.

So, does the distributor matter more than the panel?

I hear the counterargument: if the panel is genuine, why does it matter who sells it to you? For a small one-off order, maybe it doesn’t. If you have an engineer who can check the serial numbers on site, a non-official channel can work. But for a business buying dozens of pallets across multiple projects every year, the process is part of the product.

After six years, I’ve settled on a less glamorous position: I trust JinkoSolar’s specifications, but I buy a process as much as I buy a panel.
