I started buying PV modules in 2017 with one rule: compare watts per dollar. That rule cost me $12,400 in my first year. Since then I've handled B2B solar module orders for a distribution company, sourced from manufacturers like JinkoSolar, and kept a log of every significant mistake I've made. Thirteen so far. About $86,000 in avoidable spend. Not a brag. A warning.

What photovoltaic module specifications cause the most problems?

The headline is wattage. The problems are in the rows below it.

I'm not saying ignore Pmax. But Pmax is measured at STC, which means 25°C and 1000 W/m². Real installation conditions are rarely 25°C. A 550 W module on a hot roof produces less than 550 W. If you sell it as exactly 550 W, the installer will think something is defective. The module isn't defective. The expectation was set from the wrong number.

When I review photovoltaic module specifications now, I check four things: NOCT or NMOT figures, temperature coefficients, connector type and cable length, and the physical model on the label. I also check first-year and linear degradation. A difference of a few tenths in annual degradation adds up over 30 years.

In 2021, I recommended a module to an installer because its efficiency looked great. I missed that the Voc temperature coefficient was worse. On cold mornings, the string voltage exceeded the inverter maximum. The problem showed up at commissioning and delayed the project. The information was in the spec sheet the whole time. I had just read the headline.

What should you verify before a solar module OEM order?

An OEM order is not just printing your logo on someone else's panel. Once the module carries your name, the customer will come to you first. That changes the contract.

Three things to confirm in writing before signing:

First, certification. The module model needs to appear in a certification that covers the product you are selling. In most markets, that means IEC 61215 and IEC 61730, or the local equivalent like UL 61730. If your private model number does not show up in the certificate's model list, get it added before production—not after a bank asks for it.

Second, warranty process. Who handles a claim? Who pays for the replacement modules, the freight, and the testing? Ask for a real process, not a sentence that says 'we honor our warranty.'

Third, replacement stock. If a customer needs 30 modules in year 7, how long does it take? OEM buyers often underestimate this. You can't deliver what the factory no longer makes.

Should you buy JinkoSolar solar panels from a below-market trader?

Short answer: maybe. But do not skip the supply-chain check.

First, the easy facts: JinkoSolar Holding Co., Ltd. is headquartered in Shangrao, Jiangxi Province, China. It was founded in 2006 and has been listed on the NYSE under JKS since 2010. That information is public on the company profile, and it tells you JinkoSolar is a real manufacturer with a global footprint.

It does not tell you whether a trader offering cheap JinkoSolar modules has a legitimate channel. Genuine panels can end up outside official channels through canceled projects or regional oversupply. The panel may be real. The warranty path may still be messy for your market.

Ask the seller for written authorization. Check with JinkoSolar's official sales team whether that seller is an official distributor. Ask how a warranty claim would be handled for modules from that specific invoice. If the answers are vague, walk away. A below-market price looks good until you are explaining serial numbers to an unhappy customer.

Why did the cheaper quote end up costing more?

Because the cheapest price is not the cheapest total.

In Q2 2024, I compared two quotes for the same module model. One came from an official distributor; the other from a trader. The official quote looked about 4% higher per watt. But the trader's quote did not include pallet fees, local drayage, customs documentation, or the payment method fee. The official quote listed all of it from the start.

When I compared the two side by side, I finally understood the difference. Once the missing line items were added, the trader's final total came out about 9% higher than the official all-in price.

Since then, I ask 'what is not included?' before I ask 'what is the price?' A vendor that lists all fees upfront is not annoying. It's usable. The quote that hides fees until later is the one that costs.

What belongs in a solar module distributor buying guide?

Here's what I send to new teammates before they place their first order. It's short, and it has caught more than one disaster.

  • Channel. Confirm the seller is authorized to sell the exact brand in your market. A signed statement works; calling the local sales office works better.
  • Product identification. Model number, datasheet, physical label, and certificate model list need to match. Check before production, not after arrival.
  • Commercial terms. Incoterms, freight, insurance, pallet count, payment terms, and bank details. If payment goes to a third party, stop and ask why.
  • Claims route. Who handles warranty claims, in what time period, and with which documents? Establish this before the customer asks.

This is boring. Boring is good. In 2019, I skipped the channel check on a module order. The modules were genuine and the price was fair, but the seller was not authorized for our region. A warranty claim that should have been easy became a three-month problem and a customer who no longer trusted us. That one mistake paid for the whole checklist.

Why must the module label match the certificate model list?

Because banks, customs brokers, and project inspectors do not check your datasheet. They check the label physically on the module and compare it to the certificate.

In September 2022, I had a shipment stopped at a warehouse because the label carried a model suffix that did not appear in the certificate's model list. The datasheet looked fine. The power rating was fine. The difference was one small text string on a label. Storage fees, delayed installation, and an annoyed customer followed. All because one small text string didn't match the certificate page.

Here's the rule: ask for the certificate page that lists model numbers. Compare it, character by character, with the label on a sample module. Then compare it again on production samples before shipment.

We've caught 47 certificate-label mismatches in order reviews over the past 18 months. Most were fixed before production. That is exactly the point of checking.

Who pays when modules arrive damaged? (The question nobody asks before signing)

Everyone asks about wattage and lead times. Almost no one asks about a broken pallet until it happens.

A module warranty covers manufacturing defects. It does not cover a fork truck, a rough sea crossing, or rain through a torn package. Freight damage is a different claim with different rules, and the clock starts at delivery.

In 2020, we discovered 23 modules with damaged frames after the truck had already left. Because the delivery receipt said 'received in good condition,' we lost the easiest argument we had. That mistake wasn't the module maker's fault. It was ours.

So before you sign a PO, get answers to three questions. Which Incoterm are we buying under, and when does risk transfer? Who arranges cargo insurance, and who is the insured party? And how long do we have to inspect and report visible or hidden damage?

Trust me on this one. Asking before the PO costs nothing. Asking after the container leaves is a different conversation entirely.
